Chapter 3 : Energy Elements

Have you ever looked at your car head lights . They give us a constant beam light, which means that a constant voltage is being supplied to them .

However as soon as we turn on the engine, the light from our car head lights seems to fluctuate. Hence it means that the our voltage source output is dependent on some other elements, which causes the light to fluctuate , as soon as engine is turned on

Types of Sources

We have studies two type of sources till now, i.e

  • · Current Source
  • · Voltage Source

However these sources can be classified in to more general categories.

  • · Voltage Controlled Voltage Source
  • · Voltage Controlled Current Source
  • · Current Controlled Voltage Source
  • · Current Controlled Current Source

Controlled sources are elements , are normally used as models to represent behavior of different circuits.

Voltage Controlled Voltage Source

Controlled sources can be in general linear or non linear , however we, are here interested in linear sources,

If we observe, the out put , the out put voltage is dependent on factor µ

For the given input voltage V1(AB) = 1 Volt , where the µ is 3.5 volt , Find the out put VCD

VCD =µV1

=3.5 x 1= 3.5 Volt

Voltage Controlled Current Source

Here we have current source at output , however its value is being controlled by V1 voltage.

Find the current that is being provided to the system

The out put current here is g x V = 2 X 2 = 4 ampere

Similarly, we have current controlled sources. These sources out put either voltage or current are controlled by current .
